History
Nampak Plastics Europe has been formed from the merging of two
well-established UK blow-moulding companies, Plysu and BlowMocan.
Plysu was founded in 1945 initially to manufacture macintoshes
using high frequency welding to join the polymers (PVC) together.
It was not until 1964 that they started blow-moulding rigid
containers. BlowMocan was founded in 1976 by ex-Plysu employees
who saw a niche in the market and had the entrepreneurial flair
to grasp it.
Plysu was first to launch the “poly-bottle” in
the UK in 1982 having seen the concept introduced into the
American market a few years earlier. During the nineties Plysu
made a number of acquisitions that grew their manufacturing
base across Europe and into other new and dynamic market sectors.
While the above was happening Nampak, based in South Africa
had watched with interest the developments in the UK market
and seeing it’s potential, acquired BlowMocan in 1994.
It was not until 1999 that Nampak Plastics Europe was formed
when Nampak acquired Plysu Plc.
In 2004, Nampak sold its short run business to RPC Group. Nampak continues to have a significant market position in the milk and juice bottle markets.
